Judging by the title we already knew this anime would be an abomination. Well, it was exactly that. This episode follows Ichirou Suzuki, a 29 year old who works as a video game developer. He’s a nothing character who is only there to be a self insert bad ass that us nerdy wimps watch so we can feel a sense of escapism for 24 minutes.
Usually in this type of light novel adaptation the main character is some dude who gets so powerful that it becomes unbelievable and breaks my immersion of the world’s rules. Death March does not skimp out on this detail and gives us a character who moments after going to this video game world gets a huge stat increase to his level for some reason. This stat increase appears after this confrontation that Ichirou has with these generic looking lizard warriors. These lizard people are about to kill Ichirou until lo and behold, a bunch of meteors com flying out of the sky wiping out all the lizard people in these huge explosions that somehow Ichirou does not get hurt by even though he is right in the cross fire.
These moments of action are handled in the most poor use of cg animation that only anime could fuck up. And the territory of the game where this debacle took place I should mention is in the most boring looking area you could possibly imagine a video game taking place in. It’s just this brown, dirt rock canyon with no interesting detail to mention whatsoever. It seriously looks like Ichirou made his way into some garbage PS1 game that time has forgotten. In the opening intro to this anime we see these characters that will be introduced later into the show, and I cannot stress enough how generic looking these characters are. I could already predict the SAO like harem this guy will be getting himself into.
At the later part of this episode, a wild wyvern appears and is fighting Ichirou but then leaves for some reason and heads towards this marching army of people. Ichirou has suspicions that these people will not be able to fend off the wyvern so he heads towards them and he sees this girl who has a distinct looking character design (because she will be important later). This girl is falling through the air because she was attacked, but thankfully the party she is with used their magic so she can be saved from a heavy fall. But then for some reason Ichirou jumps up and grabs the girl even though it looks like she was already being saved, though it is obvious this was just to show us that the relationship between these two will be important later.
The only positive I can say about this first episode is that there was this one scene near the beginning while Ichirou was still in the real world where Ichirou was sitting on a bench and a couple dozen meters away from him there was this little girl who was kneeling on the ground crying. Ichirou went up to this girl and asked if she was okay, then the girl’s mother showed up and there was a little bit of tension building to whether or not the mom thought Ichirou was some sort of creep. Then when the mom left, Ichirou immediately thought to himself that the mom was hot. This scene was pretty funny even though it had nothing to do with the rest of the episode.
Overall this first episode was pretty terrible and i would not recommend anyone to watch it. I had to revive this stupid blog just so I can talk about how much I hated it.
